Gibraltar will mark our departure from the European Union tonight with a short and solemn ceremony at midnight, says the Government.
The focus of the ceremony will be the three flagpoles at the northern end of Gibraltar which are located just a few metres from our land border with the EU. Read more

When Gibraltar joined the EU not all aspects of the EU treaties applied to us. We were outside the Common Agricultural Policy; outside the Common Fisheries Policy; Gibraltar applied no VAT; it was also outside the Custom Union.
And we have been outside the Schengen Area given that the United Kingdom opted out of the Schengen Agreement.
That is to say we had one foot in and one foot out of the European Union. Now, we will be completely out of the EU. But we have to look back to look forward. Read more

On Wednesday the European Parliament ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. It was one of the most historical political moments in the EU since the second world war as the EU Parliament said farewell to those British MEP’s. This ended a three-hour debate and more than three-and-a-half years of tortuous and complex negotiations between Brussels and Britain, who will be the first ever EU member state to leave the European Union. The Gibraltar branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society (“RCS”) will greet Brexit day with a firm determination to redefine our relations with both our European and wider Commonwealth partners.

As Gibraltarian British citizens, we have worn our Gibraltar, British and European badges with equal pride and with no sense of contradiction. Instead of nationally jabbering on about the cost of living, divorce, abortion, traffic, the frontier queues and so on, shouldn’t we, as the small country that we are, focus our creative energy on identifying what kind of new and modern relationship with Europe or the EU best suits our national interest, and not just leave it to the politicians to decide on everything single thing about our future and what’s going to happen to all of us after Brexit! A meeting was held at No 6 Convent Place to discuss the outbreak of the Wuhan Novel Coronavirus in China. A coordinating group of Government Departments, the Royal Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar’s Essential Services has been established as a precaution to monitor the situation and prepare for any possible effects that the virus could have on Gibraltar.
