On Friday 8 May 2020, Gibraltar will have an additional Bank Holiday in order to mark the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) and to enable people to pay tribute to those who served in one of the most significant events in Europe’s history. 8 May 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the Allies’ formal acceptance of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945. Unite has balloted its members at the Morrison's Store, following a Union recommended offer, after a long day of negotiations.
The offer put to our members consisted of a 2.1% consolidated pay increase. A £200 one-off payment for those employees moving from weekly pay to four weekly pay, in addition those employees affected by this change, could also take advantage of a soft loan, at the time the change will take place. 87.5% voted in favour. A major anti-money laundering operation involving over 60 officers commenced yesterday morning at various locations around Gibraltar. A number of residential premises were searched and several local persons were arrested on suspicion of money laundering offences. Read more

A local man was found dead inside his home in the south district in the early hours of yesterday morning. No foul play is suspected.
RGP officers attended the scene at approximately 1 am. Scenes of Crime officers and a GHA ambulance were called. The family of the deceased have been informed. Read more

The new government has lost no time to announce a major reform programme for the Public Service.
Darren Grech, Chief Secretary, has set out a major reform programme for the Public Service which will be rolled out over the next few years. The reform will include a restructuring of existing departmental management systems and of officers’ areas of responsibility, plus a review of existing government premises and a digital transformation of public services. The Government has published the Drugs (Misuse) (Amendment) Regulations 2019 (the “Regulations”), which amend the Drugs (Misuse) Regulations 2005. The Regulations provide for the supply and possession of certain cannabis-based products for medicinal use in limited circumstances.
Registered medical practitioners working in the Gibraltar Health Authority (“GHA”) will be authorised to supply certain products to patients. Before being permitted to authorise the supply of cannabis-based products, each practitioner will first be required to complete appropriate training in respect of the use of these products. Read more

Power Cuts/ Control Tower
When you hear of Spanish helicopters flying freely over our air space; when you hear of alien boats landing on our shores; when you walk down Main Street on a day when cruise ships are in town and a power cut occurs, yet again due to another power cable being drilled through; all of which is hugely prejudicial to Gibraltar’s interests; when on top of all that you hear that the MOD forgot, or didn’t bother to inform any civilian authorities that they had laid down an electric cable, and that yet more flights have been diverted to Malaga because there was no one available to man the control tower; you have to wonder whether our authorities are really in control of the safety and smooth running of Gibraltar’s affairs and whether the MOD has some hidden agenda.
