We recently published an article about a plant which is poisonous and can be found all over Gibraltar. It is the nerium oleander, also known as adelfa, which is a large ornamental evergreen shrub with a profusion of flowers of different colours generally in the summer months.

Looking globally at the issue of violence against women in particular; the UN Security Council has the power to act. It can do so by issuing sanctions against a country and including as a reason, sexual violence against women and girls.

The Opposition are perfectly entitled to adopt whatever nebulous policy they want in relation to the vaccination of children aged 12-15. However, what is dangerous is that they should set themselves up as experts on a sensitive medical issue in a way which can only generate confusion and misunderstanding among the population. Additionally, in taking a position which is nebulous they are doing no more than creating confusion on an issue on which clarity is essential. The position of the GSLP Liberal Government is clear: we are making vaccines available, with stocks generously supplied by the United Kingdom, and we advise that all eligible individuals should take the recommended dosage. The Environmental Safety Group (ESG) are hosting their annual Clean up the World event tomorrow, Saturday 18th September, to encourage civic pride and raise litter awareness. The event is in its 17th year and has been held on the Rock since 2005.
ESG is a non-governmental organisation and was formed in 2000. It is a registered charity and works within the community to promote environmental issues. In July, co-founder Janet Howitt received a Governor’s Award for Merit for her services to environmental awareness in Gibraltar. Read more

The UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) announced yesterday that a single booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is recommended to be given, initially to everyone aged 50 and over, six months after their second dose of the vaccine. Following this announcement, the Medical Director and Director of Public Health for the Gibraltar Health Authority have now recommended to the Gibraltar Government that this advice should be implemented locally. For most of its 300 years as a British possession, the military importance of Gibraltar overshadowed all other considerations. During the Second World War, the Allies possessed not a single spot of ground in all the region of Western Europe, except for the Gibraltar fortress, as General Eisenhower noted in his memoirs.
