Local Unite Regional Officer Victor Ochello is expected to retire at the end of May from his top local union post held since February 2012.
The UK Unite Executive Council it seems have decided to disregard opening the vacancy to any local potential candidate to take over from Ochello, deciding instead to hand this important local union position to Stuart Davies who was only appointed UK National Officer responsible for Unite Gibraltar only last year. Davies set to take over as Unite regional officer in Gibraltar when Ochello says his final goodbyes. Read more

The Brexit Strategic Group set up by the Gibraltar Government will be meeting tomorrow Tuesday in order to discuss the degree of contingency planning for a no deal Brexit going forward. This follows the decision taken in the United Kingdom last week to wind down plans for leaving the European Union without a Withdrawal Agreement in place. Read more

The United Kingdom has agreed a further extension for its and our departure from the European Union.
As Honourable Members will be aware, the Second Special Meeting of the European Council on Article 50 of the Treaty, held last night in Brussels, resulted in an offer being made to the UK for such an extension. Read more

Inspector Sean Perera of the Royal Gibraltar Police, who heads the local INTERPOL office, is currently attending the 15th INTERPOL Annual Heads of NCB Conference being held in Lyon France. The 3-day conference being held from the 9th – 11th April brings together the leadership of NCBs from around the world to examine matters related to cooperation among NCBs, between NCBs and INTERPOL General Secretariat, operational issues, exchange of best practices and provide updates about INTERPOL policing capabilities. Year 2 pupils at Governor’s Meadow First School held a History Day on Castles this week. History Day engages pupils by making their learning on a topic relevant, fun and exciting. The work, led by the Year 2 Coordinator Mrs Chichon and her team, is a part of a wider academic enrichment program for pupils that aims to bring their learning to life, and provided a culmination to pupils’ in depth learning and research on the topic. A documentary of the evacuation of the people of Gibraltar to Madeira during the Second World War will premiere in Gibraltar later this month.
Work on the project commenced in 2015, as part of the events to mark the 75th anniversary of the evacuation.
It will be recalled that the people of Gibraltar were first evacuated to French Morocco in 1940. When France fell, they returned to Gibraltar from where they were sent onwards to Madeira, Jamaica and the United Kingdom. The last evacuees returned to the Rock in 1951. Read more

Minister Sir Joe Bossano is currently in China participating in the 4th World Emerging Industries Summit at the invitation of Zhengzhou Municipal Government and the Asia Pacific CEO organization [APCEO].
Zhengzhou is the capital city of the Henan region. Although the summit was at regional level, the capital city has 40 million inhabitants with a further 60 million in the rest of the Henan region and would be considered a large country in a European context. Read more
