Vandalism
Some time back I photographed one of the benches on Waterport road which someone had tried to lift by loosening the screws which held it onto the pavement. This time they appear to have gone further. I imagine that in trying to further unloosen said bolts, they have ended up bending the wrought iron side of the bench (this must have been done with great force) and in so doing, splitting one of the boards on the seat. It seems quite extraordinary that this was done without being seen by anyone; as it must have taken some time to bring about. This type of vandalism should be eradicated by the Royal Gibraltar police; if we value public property. I understand that the benches in Main Street were all removed; but what’s for sure is that helpers like these, are not needed by Government. Read more

No sanitizers on site
According to a reliable source, at Eroski`s supermarket at the airport on Thursday of last week, as they entered the store from the exit side which was the only entrance open, there was no sanitizer on site for one’s hands, nor was there anyone sanitizing the bars of the shopping trolleys as they were carried in. Not very reassuring! Read more

When I hear the often and well used phrase “women being empowered,” I sense that “machismo” has been around for so long and is so deep rooted, that I believe it has diluted the strengths that such a well meaning sentiment embodies. I speak of women journalists who, over the course of 200 years, have been under threat. The incidents are too numerous to go into; but many female journalists have not only faced long jail sentences because of their work, but been killed for their reporting; something which has seen a surge in recent years. This is the question on many people’s lips around the world; a question which they may well want an answer to, from their respective Governments. For after listening to their proposed plans, many are not getting what the point of the plans actually is. For some Governments it can be an ultimate agenda, or the desired consequence of a planned series of events, often elaborate and unknown to outsiders. Read more

There are high hopes for a covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University Scientists. They have begun clinical trials which have shown promise in rhesus monkeys that after been given the vaccine, have remained healthy, despite a heavy exposure to the virus. Read more

An extract from the summer of 1964, tells of how Joshua Hassan was preparing for the United Nations debate. “He organised and led the drafting by a committee composed of all the elected members of the Legislature, of a short, well-argued and telling pamphlet called “The future of Gibraltar,” which was sent to all the members of the committee of 24, together with an album of photographs of Gibraltar.” Read more

Animals not in captivity
It’s is not only the environment that is welcoming the lack of traffic and the lack of activity out at sea. Schools of dolphins have been seen in nearby Spain enjoying the ocean at their ease. Read more

As a daily routine to get the heart pumping and the knees in shape, having walked down our four flights of steps, I started the uphill climb perusing on those words uttered by so many supposedly knowledgeable people out there; people who have been telling the world that a highly contagious virus was going to descend upon us in the not too distant future. Two questions hammered in my head “How did they know?” and “why did no one pay attention to their warning?” Read more

What it means to be one step ahead
When hopefully our present predicament is over, and we look back on this challenging chapter of our lives, we may well realize that compared to much more powerful and greater nations than us, Gibraltar has stood its ground well. We may be a small nation; but a discerning one and sagacious in struggles. Read more

Whilst we were unawares, someone took the breaks off and sent us hurtling towards the unknown, with a virus hot on our heels; and no time to heed the request of the whiting to the snail to “walk a little faster,” because he had a porpoise treading on his tail. We were going too fast and we needed to slow down and get our breath back. Read more
