It has become a frequent occurrence for far-left forces in Europe to vilify successful businessmen who build up their commercial enterprises contributing greatly to the national economy, providing employment and taxes for state coffers. The resentment and continuous denigration of these individuals whose assets have flourished through their own merit, to provide hundreds if not thousands of jobs for ordinary families is mindless. In a short ceremony at a packed Mayor’s Parlour in the City Hall yesterday, Ms Carmen Gomez officially became Mayor of Gibraltar and Mr Nicky Guerrero Deputy Mayor.

The ceremony was presided over by the Chief Minister who thanked the outgoing Mayor Christian Santos for his contribution over the last two years. He then formally placed the Deputy Mayor medallion on Nicky Guerrero and the Mayoral chain on Carmen Gomez, who was already fully attired in the robes of office. Read more

Sir Joe Bossano made an impassioned plea for recognition of the “City State of Gibraltar” in his recent address to the United Nations Seminar in Bali. This will serve to frame any debate on decolonisation which is surely set to follow the settlement of our departure from the European Union, one way or the other. Read more
