Trevor Hammond clearly does not listen and does not understand. At last week’s press conference on the new Solar power plant, the Minister clearly stated that the plant had come at no cost to Government, in the same way as the Ecowave plant. Both followed expressions of interest by the relevant parties, which were the only ones which were progressed by the parties out of several that came forward and were entertained at the same time when it became clear back in 2012 that with the new Government, Gibraltar was at last moving into renewables, says Govt. The Minister for Sport and senior officials from the Gibraltar Football Association have held a number of very positive meetings this week in relation to the Victoria Stadium and the forthcoming Island Games.
The meetings were held in order to coordinate, on the one hand, the requirements of the Gibraltar Football Association during the months of May, June and July in relation to the end of the domestic season and European club football and, on the other, the use of Victoria Stadium by Gibraltar’s athletes in advance of the Island Games. The Government is to launch a major initiative aimed at combatting Gibraltar’s drug problem. Steered by a dedicated Drug Strategy Team, this will include aspects of law enforcement, prevention, treatment and harm reduction. Read more

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia has said that the Northern Defences have been transformed from a “jungle into a jewel” as a result of an ongoing Government initiative to restore and clean up the area.
Dr Garcia visited the site in order to witness the evolution of the project at first hand and to see latest discovery. The Northern Defences remains under the direct control of his office with Mr Carl Viagas as Project Director. Read more

The Gibraltar NASUWT has circulated a copy of the Chief Minister's letter to all its members and told them that they will be balloted on whether or not they wish to take industrial action.
As a result, given the wide circulation the letter now enjoys, the Chief Minister is publishing the letter so it is available to anyone who wants to fully understand the terms of the response sent to the teacher's union and which has resulted in the decision to ballot for industrial action. There are robberies and thefts galore on the Rock, with the latest being a break-in into premises where two youths forced open two gambling machines, when hundreds of pounds disappeared, and damage in excess of £2,000 reported by police. They also broke into a shop - and numeous bottles of perfume, cartons of tobacco etc, with an estimated total value of over £3,000 was stolen. Read more

Gibraltar participated in the 54th MedCruise General Assembly held in Kusadasi, Turkey from 7th to 10th May.
MedCruise is the Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports. A General Assembly is held twice a year to discuss issues affecting the industry in the Mediterranean and adjoining seas. Read more
