Charles III made history on Saturday when he was crowned King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as of His other Realms and Territories. The event, although lower key in some respects from the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, was nonetheless a showcase for the pomp, ceremony and pageantry which the United Kingdom is famous for. It was a day of pride and celebration in Gibraltar too.
CROWNEDThe last time a King was crowned was his grandfather George VI in 1936. The world was a different place then. Both George VI and Elizabeth II, for example, held the title Emperor of India until that country became independent in 1947. Yet the remaining Commonwealth Realms were accorded a special place during the Coronation, as indeed they were during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth last year. King Charles is the Sovereign of them all.
