PAST AND PRESENT: Landport Gate

PAST AND PRESENT: Landport Gate

by RYAN ASQUEZ
Landport Gate is a familiar sight to most people. Countless people pass it each day on their way to and from Casemates Square and Main Street, and for tourists who enter Gibraltar through the frontier, it is often their way into town. However, what many passers-by are perhaps not aware of is the fact that this structure has a fascinating past which is intimately connected to Gibraltar’s very rich military history.

PUERTA DE TIERRA
The first gate at Landport may have been built during the Islamic period. Significant rebuilding works took place during the Spanish period, particularly under the engineer Luis Bravo de Acuña, who prepared several detailed plans of Gibraltar and its fortifications in 1627. The gate appears in these plans.During the Spanish period, the gate was known as ‘la Puerta de Tierra’ (‘the Land Gate’). In contrast, ‘la Puerta de la Mar’ (‘the Sea Gate’) was located in the adjacent Barcina district (today Casemates).
