“A last minute thing”, wins main award at Spring Visual Arts Exhibition
Mr. Cortes commenced the ceremony by stating he would increase the prizes to artists and show how much they appreciate their participation. “I think the contribution that culture as a whole, and the arts as well as the performing arts, has made during this time is hugely significant. A lot of people seem to think that culture really has no place. To me it is critical, it is the essence of any community, it is the essence of Gibraltar. Believe me that I’ve had to fight hard to make sure that culture is there, and if you’ve seen my press conferences... I’ve mentioned it many many times, this is something I think we have to keep insisting: we continue when all else seems to be collapsing all around us. So thank you, and I count on you for your support in the future to increase the standing of culture. I promised before covid we were a revolution of culture in Gibraltar, and I still intend to fulfil that, and I count on you as my co-revolutionaries to help me achieve it. So thank you very much,” he said.
When the ceremony ended, the award winners and organisers stepped outside for a photograph taken from the first floor facing down. The PANORAMA took this time to interview Kristel Turner, who won The Ministry of Culture Award at £3,000 for her photography piece, ‘Empty Register’.
