Tackling the COVID-19 is a Global Learning Curve!

In the same government announcement, another important issue, was brought from the depths of the ‘valley of contradictory inconsistency’ when the abortion referendum was postponed.

This was an issue, that had marred coherent and consistent policy thinking during these global trying times. it is hoped, Gibraltar can now move forward together, to the next important and ‘delaying phase’ of introducing further measures to increase social distancing!

Understandably, given what is happening elsewhere in Europe and beyond, the worry was and still is with many people, that we may have been slow to act in the early stages of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The questions being asked, have the local authorities done the right things, at the right time, that will enable Gibraltar to contain the threat posed by the virus? Or have we set up the conditions for an explosion of cases similar to what has been seen in Italy for example? Time will tell?

But at least, one huge national distraction, the ‘Abortion Referendum’ that could always had waited, is now out the way.

Natural For People to Ask Questions

When an epidemic is spreading fast, like the present one. It is natural, for people to question whether the protective systems being adopted are robust enough? Of course, one must take care not to let such questions become too vociferous... in that they could trigger panic:But questions, should legitimately and freely be allowed to be made. Not only from the media, and the likes of the opposition, but also the general-public. Without those, who are leading the way and receiving the best advice, getting the hump, or becoming upset and annoyed when decisions are questioned or criticised!

It is always possible to criticise, on what has been done and agreed, as well as to claim, that more could have been completed …it’s all about living in a democracy you know?

In fact, I don’t mind saying, I am one of those people who has criticised certain decisions taken or not taken. Particularly, some statements that have been made. Although generally, I believe that things have generally been handled well.

However, there are one or two really ‘sharp-end’ related concerns, like the ‘Frontier Issue’, that will still be making news in the days ahead, as will, the ‘Schools Remaining Open’ There is now, no doubt that the coronavirus story, will progressively get worse, before it gets any better. So, I think we should be confident that even when the more acute next phase really opens, we will still be able to keep it in check.

What will remain crucial throughout, is a strong and clear information campaign targeted to all sectors of society.
