RGP in action to curb underage drinking

Leo Olivero

I welcome, the weekend initiative by the Royal Gibraltar Police, who together with the Gibraltar Youth Services were engaged in a planned initiative to stifle ‘underage drinking’.

It was encouraging to see the Police and Youth Services publicly coming together in an operation to warn and inform youngsters about the dangers and corresponding laws regarding the dangers of underage drinking and other substances.

Both agencies, visited selected locations at Zoca Flank, the Boulevard & Wellington Front where young people (underage drinkers) are known to congregate, as seen in RGP pics posted on their official twitter account engaging with a large crowd of youth in the Zoca Flank area.

This, is an excellent initiative, that must be welcomed, as underage drinking is a concerning issue. One in fact, directly related to the increasing and serious ‘Drug and Alcohol’ problem affecting Gibraltar on a number of related fronts!

But it didn’t stop there, it was another busy alcohol and drug dominated weekend for the police.

Which was also officially recorded, by ‘RGP Deputy Commissioner Richard Ullger’ who took to his own official twitter account to explain how police officers, over the weekend had dealt with: “vulnerable, domestic violence, drink drivers, people in possession of drugs and offensive weapons and much more as he described, as a busy weekend with public order incidents fuelled by alcohol”

But all this, is the natural and expected result of the increased incidence of alcohol and drug use doing its work on society, particularly the younger generation. But also, its due to the failure to act in a decisive manner, by not implementing the required measures, programmes and in introducing a structured coordinated community approach to substance abuse in our society...This is not happening at the moment, although in reality it never has?
