Housing problems that follow marriage breakdowns

The Minister rightly points out that when there is parental alienation of the children by one parent or another the situation becomes even more distressing.

The Minister says she would be mindful of the representations that are made particularly by fathers who feel disadvantaged upon separation or divorce.

“we in Action for Housing have dealt with many such cases and know that one of the main problems affecting fathers in this situation are lack of housing.

“After becoming homeless they have to endure months if not years before they are given Government accommodation, and even after having been re-housed their problems are not over because as single men they are given one bedroom flats which in most cases are not big enough to accommodate their children with whom they share custody.

“Minister Samantha Sacramento was until very recently Minister for Housing and must be well aware of the housing problems which have affected and continue to affect men who have divorced or separated. The lack of housing also affects women who have to leave their matrimonial homes and to wait months or even years in the refuge for women before being re-housed by Government.

"We urge the Minister to take into account how the lack of housing seriously affects parents and children after a separation, and see to it that this housing deficit is taken into account and properly addressed, “said Henry Pinna. For Action for Housing.
