Keep Gibraltar in safe hands

Keep Gibraltar in safe hands

By JOSEPH GARCIA, GSLP Liberal candidate

ELECTION 2019

The backdrop against which this general election takes place is the potential departure of the United Kingdom and Gibraltar from the European Union.

The possibility of a No Deal Brexit remains as one of a number of outcomes.

We could leave on 31 October without a deal.

We could even leave with no deal on 31 December 2020, after a Withdrawal Agreement comes into effect and once the transition is over.

Given the degree of political uncertainty in the UK, and the different variations of Brexit that could happen, it is essential that the Government of Gibraltar stays the same.

The GSLP/Liberals have successfully navigated through Brexit since June 2016. Fabian and I have lived and breathed it every moment. It has been intense.

We have established personal relationships with all the main players.

In Brussels, we have met all the Member States of the European Union. We met the key MEPs in the European Parliament. We have met the EU negotiators.

In London we have met with MPs from every political party. On both the leave side and on the remain side. We engaged with the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales and with every political party in Northern Ireland.

We discussed Brexit also with the other UK Overseas Territories and with the Crown Dependencies as well.

The degree of personal contacts that we have established is reflected in the fact that we made Gibraltar’s case in person first to David Cameron, then to Theresa May and now to Boris Johnson. This has never happened before.

We have taken Gibraltar right to the top of the UK political establishment.

We have maintained a stable and secure Government in Gibraltar at a time when both the UK, Spain and other EU countries face political upheaval.

The GSLP/Liberals successfully protected the market access of our businesses into the United Kingdom as part of the Brexit process.

We secured lower fees for our university students.

We agreed continued healthcare agreements with London.

We are consulted on future UK trade deals.

And most importantly, Gibraltar was included in the Withdrawal Agreement itself. This means that the transition period, if there is one, would also apply to us.

We have been able to protect the position of Gibraltar if the Withdrawal Agreement comes into effect and have kept Gibraltar safe.

The truth is that we are the only ones who have the knowledge, the experience and the personal connections to take Gibraltar forward.

Indeed, the GSLP/Liberals are the only ones with a post-Brexit economic plan for the future.

This is a vital moment in the history of Gibraltar. It bears echoes of other crucial nation-building events like the closure of the frontier in 1969 or the closure of the naval dockyard in 1984. It is important that you elect into Government the people who have the knowhow, the plans and the ability to deal with the challenges that may come our way.

Now is not the time to change. Gibraltar needs a team of people with the experience, the expertise and with the plan to steer Gibraltar through Brexit.

It is important to bear in mind that even if a Withdrawal Agreement comes into effect, we could face the same no deal scenario on 31 December 2020 if the UK and the EU cannot agree a future relationship.

Now is not the time to take chances.

Only a GSLP/Liberal Government have a proven track record.

Keep Gibraltar in safe hands.

Vote all ten GSLP/Liberal candidates.
