Memorial steps under attack at the wrong time

The steps at the boulevard where the War Memorial statue is sited, which is so busy with pedestrians, is under attack - there was debris all over the place yesterday as workers arrived, and access points were sealed off. 

Certainly those steps were in need of attention, but that has been the case since time immemorial. But is it not madness to do so in the heat of the summer when thousands of tourists arrive daily from coaches and make their way into town along those steps, crossing by the zebra crossing and onto John Mackintosh Square.

Is it not the wrong time to knock the place down? What a mess!
