David Francis claims his first Ranking title of the season!
In the first round David narrowly overcame one of our best youth players, Justin Hewitt 4-3, Justin missed 3 match darts in the 6th leg and another 3 in the 7th leg to have won the game. This was then followed up with a 4-1 win against Daryl Vassalo. In the quarter finals it was another close game against top youth player Craig Galliano, 5-4.
The semi-final against Roy Asquez was closer than the result suggests, but missed doubles let Roy down, and the end result was 5-0 for David. This then put David in the final up against Dylan Duo, who has only recently recovered from a leg injury.
Dylan hadn’t had an easy draw by any means. After beating Francis Remorino 4-0 in the first round, he then successfully defeated Med Cup team mate Christian Tosso 4-1, before facing Gibraltar’s number one, Dyson Parody in the quarter finals. This was a tense game between two old rivals, but Dylan showed that he was now fully fit, winning an exciting game 5-2. This was followed up with a 5-1 win against Carlos Munoz in the semi-final.
The final itself, between David and Dylan was exciting to watch, with both players trading high scores and the lead moving from one to the other. With the score level at 5-5, it was anybody’s game, but David held his nerve to take the deciding leg and win this year’s Joe Goldwin trophy.
During the tournament there were a total of eighteen 180’s and four ton plus finishes.
180’s were hit by David Francis, Craig Galliano, Roy Asquez, George Federico, Jeremy Cruz & Daryl Vassalo (2 each), and 1 each from Sean Negrette, Antony Lopez, Charles Borastero, Justin Hewitt, Carlos Munoz & Christian Tosso
There were high finishes from Craig Galliano (115), David Francis (114), Dennis Sheehan (112 and Sean Negrette (111).
Thanks once again to the Duo family for looking after us and making it a memorable evening at the College Cosmos Club, said GDA committee member.
