MORE SUCCESS IN ABU DHABI AS SPECIAL OLYMPICS GAMES NEARS CONCLUSION
In the morning Daniella Vinent ran the race of her life to come in second in her division of the 400m, some 26 seconds faster than her predicted time, and so claimed the silver medal. This followed another popular run by Mark Dos Santos who came home in 6th place but united the crowd behind him. Later in the day Miguel Rubio also claimed a 6th place in his 100m sprint final, in what was a very tight race, knocking a couple of seconds off his best time.
Shane Martinez, who had only been released from hospital 24 hours previously after being taken ill during the trip, claimed gold in the men's doubles bowling event with partner Samyr Anakkar. They scored 911 in a difficult division of 8 teams, and beat Team GB into second place.
Meanwhile Gibraltar achieved its first success in the pool when Douglas Pitaluga won the 100m freestyle, beating his closest rival by 5 seconds and so claim Gibraltar's 5th gold medal.
As the end of the Games draws near Team Gibraltar finished the day with a total medal tally of 5 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze, ahead of many much larger countries including New Zealand, Portugal and Turkey.
