Serious situation foreseen if new post-Brexit frontier rules come into force

The Cross-Frontier Group says they held an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss imminent changes in the regulations that govern the operating conditions for the export into Gibraltar of perishable foodstuffs through the frontier with Spain upon Brexit.

Present at the meeting were Antonio Varela, chairman of the College of Customs Agents in the Campo de Gibraltar and other sector representatives and a broad representation of the Cross-Frontier Group, headed by its chairman Lionel Chipolina.

'VITAL IMPORTANCE'

Matters of vital importance to the importation of products into Gibraltar were discussed at this meeting. All aspects relating to the new operating conditions were carefully analysed and it became clear that if the misgivings expressed by all relevant parties are not attended to a serious situation could ensue.

A statement adds: "It would bring serious detriment to exporters to Gibraltar, to customs agents and to a large number of workers in this sector. Small businesses in the Campo too could be affected given the increased importation costs. Alarmingly some products could even become scarce in Gibraltar.

"We estimate that up to 60% of related businesses could be affected if measures are not taken.

"The Cross-Frontier Group will therefore continue to work and collaborate with the pertinent authorities on both sides of the frontier so that businesses, workers and citizens in general are not adversely affected by the new situation."
