Abortion: The Last Social Taboo

Now the abortion debate has gone into full political mode with the Government and Opposition already in their third set of abortion exchanges. You can certainly expect the issue to complicate itself even further. Where inevitable as is the local political trait, confusion and division will divide public opinion even further! 

Yesterday the Government extended an offer to the Opposition to work together on a Draft Abortion Bill. Sounds ominous, when you think ‘this Government and this Opposition’ hardly see eye-to-eye on anything and now we expect them to agree on an important, emotive and sensitive piece of legislation! Wrong Call!

Abortion has always been a scary taboo topic in Gibraltar. It is an extremely powerful and impassioned issue with complex arguments over details - number of weeks of pregnancy, how it is performed, who should sign the form, when it is or is not justified. When does life begin and so on?
