High suicide rates attributed to ‘Domino effect’, say psychiatrists

Gibraltar’s worryingly high suicide rate may have come about due to a ‘domino effect’ where victims of mental illness mimicked the behaviour of other cases. 

A local psychiatric nurse with over two decades experience said the Rock has a ‘big problem’ regarding the recent spate of suicides that had ‘similar circumstances’.

“The recent cases of suicides could have been as a result of a domino effect, especially due to the fact that we live in a small community,” said the mental health professional who wished to remain anonymous for fear of repercussions. “As far as the trend in Gibraltar goes, I see it possibly as a choice that has been offered since the first case that has made people think: ‘if they have done it, then it is an option’.”
