EU Issues Five Future Scenarios Until 2025

Leo Olivero

The official divorce date for the UK/Gibraltar and the European Union is set for 29 March 2019. Until then, there is a whole year of difficult and nail-biting negotiations to get through.

But have you thought what will happen to the EU once the UK and Gibraltar say their final good-byes?

Britain is hoping it will not be an abrupt end with UK PM Theresa May hoping EU countries will agree to a two-year Brexit transition during which the UK would continue to enjoy unrestricted access to the single market.

Keeping Our Ears Firmly To The Ground

Where Gibraltar is concerned, bilateral talks between Madrid and London have already started - and although we understand the Gibraltar Government have been fully briefed - details have not been made public, apart from unofficial reports regarding the future use of Gibraltar’s airport.

Pretty much, Gibraltar is dependent on the tsunami of high-level political assurances and guarantees that have come our way from the British Government, particularly during the last 18 months. In the latter sense, our relations with the UK have been carefully engineered to a level where politically the UK/GIB engine is humming, as it should. That said, we should not take anything for granted and keep our ears firmly to the ground.

European Commission Present EU Member States Five Future Potential Scenarios:

The scenarios are laid out in a white paper imagining what the EU could look like in 2025 and range from “carrying on” to “nothing but the single market” to “doing much more together”.

It calls for member States to consider the five different scenarios as a form of thought experiment, not as detailed blueprints or policy prescriptions.

The white paper sticks to neutral language and has no favourites among the scenarios it seems, although predictable, EU Commission preferences are not too hard to identify.
