SPECIAL REPORT by PETER TABERNER
Gibraltar’s business community is still wondering whether a full Brexit agreement will be brokered, but also if there will be access to the Schengen Area, which would hugely affect all sectors of the economy.
So far the government has firmly stated that the main objective is to create a common travel area between Gibraltar and the Schengen zone, for the future relationship of Gibraltar with the European Union. Read more

It’s no secret that Gibraltar and Spain have problem cockroach areas. Main town area has become increasingly worse when storm drains aren’t functioning correctly.
DRAINS
These cockroaches are mainly seen coming out of clogged drains and they love to inhabit the plumbing of old buildings. With so many houses needing repair within the town area the problem seems to be getting worse. When the winter weather starts to set in and the streets are soaked in rain the cockroaches from fear of drowning find some dry places to wait it out. Read more

Unfortunately the GHA have been found to have earned a progressively poor reputation. This is based on a collection of failings that aren’t being corrected!
SEEKING
It’s easy to find fault in a system when you’re in pain or seeking medical advice with staffs being reluctant to help! What does the current position of the GHA mean for our health service? ‘No one’s home syndrome,’ isn’t a real condition however there is a huge lack of staff wanting to answer the phone and pay attention to their patients. Flickering light at the end of the Gibraltar Airport Tunnel suggests the fourteen-year-long construction saga may be gift-wrapped and ready for the festive period. That is unless celebrations are cut short by further delays from a Spanish contractor twice disposed of by successive government administrations for failing to satisfy standards. Read more

The question always arises as to why Spain is allowed to create difficulties at the frontier with American personnel who consequently have to turn back because they are stopped from entering into Gibraltar. Curiously, in 1997, the Commissioner President Jaques Santer and his wife visited the Rock privately. Apparently they endured a queue of nearly two hours, which they thought ludicrous to the extreme. Unite the Union Gibraltar has clashed with the government over its tough economic plan it says is the ‘biggest wage squeeze’ on workers in decades. The largest local union launched a ‘cost-of-living crisis’ campaign earlier this month that mimics its UK counterparts’ call for the government to tax the rich. Unite’s lack of faith in the GSLP administration was compounded by the commission of two UK economists tasked with scrutinising the Rock’s current economic and political situation. Could it be that two foreign financial experts can find a better solution than the GSLP to cushion the impact of an imminent global recession? Read more

As autumn approaches this year’s peak of the tourist season is now coming to an end, and it would appear that this key sector of Gibraltar’s economy continues to make a recovery as the Covid threat subsides. Read more

Gibraltar’s dependence on cross-frontier workers has shot up in the last decade, and the GSLP now wants to reduce the number of daily commuters. Read more

It would be right and proper that when a newspaper, a freebie supposedly local, writes about the state of our beaches, that they don`t just say it marks a big improvement from 2018 as far as Western beach is concerned, but that they clarify that the poor quality, largely due to levels of sewage contamination, is a problem we have inherited from Spain. IN MY OPINION by F. OLIVA
The proposed "revolution" in mainstream education in Gibraltar, a lamentable mirroring of what is happening across the western world, is throwing up many downsides and issues of concern.
