In his budget speech, Leader of the Opposition Keith Azopardi said that the surplus projection is built on “hopeless fiction – that it does not stand up to scrutiny and is constructed on a simple manipulation of figures and an under-projection of estimates in areas where the Government must know the projections are unrealistic. The Government should be allowed to finish what they started, said Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia in relation to the treaty negotiations. In his contribution to the budget debate he said that the GSLP/Liberals are best placed to lead Gibraltar going forward whether there was a treaty with the EU or indeed in a no treaty scenario. Unite, the union for workers in Gibraltar, have welcomed the measures announced in the Chief Minister’s 2023 budget speech to address the cost of living crisis, but have stated that in relation to public sector pay, members will decide whether these measures go far enough in a public sector wide ballot.
