INFECTIONS
Infections are caused by microorganisms that attach themselves to body cells and replicate. These microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa (single-celled organisms), lice and helminths (parasites and worms).
To facilitate an infection, three things must be present:
A microorganism
A vulnerable host
A means of spreading (this is called transmission)
All infections have the potential to cause a person to become sick, though most are not harmful as the body and immune system provide various forms of protection. Read more

For decades, the Cavalcade has been a highlight of Gibraltar’s social and cultural calendar. It would have normally taken place yesterday, the eve of the Epiphany. But this year, it has unfortunately been postponed again due to the ongoing pandemic. It nonetheless remains a much-treasured event, and to learn more about it I spoke to Eric Abudarham, President of the Three Kings Cavalcade Committee. Read more

Unite's Public Sector Branch says in a statement that Brexit, COVID-19 and our inability to weather the storm financially has led to economic hardships for Gibraltar and our community.
They add: To weather such storm it is important that HMGOG engages in meaningful and transparent collective bargaining with the Unions as opposed to taking unilateral decisions and expecting conformity. Read more

NEW YEAR MESSAGE
by Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party
Dr Joseph Garcia CMG
The traditional Christmas and New Year celebrations will have been very different for most of us this time round. Many will have exercised greater caution, gathered in reduced numbers, shielded the elderly and the vulnerable and prayed that next time round we will be free of COVID-19.
The year 2021 has sadly been a challenging one. Governments and peoples all over the planet have continued to endure the serious public health effects of a global pandemic coupled with the harsh economic consequences that this has brought in its wake. Read more

PANORAMA CAMPAIGN
by JOE GARCIA
Just over a year ago, the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said that the Government's view was supportive of the PANORAMA CAMPAIGN for a statue of Winston Churchill to be erected in Winston Churchill Avenue.
In recognising the PANORAMA CAMPAIGN he added: "Winston Churchill has long had an avenue in Gibraltar but that is NOT enough in the Government's view.
"The legacy of Churchill should be recognised more visibly in Gibraltar and a statue, as PANORAMA is campaigning for, would be one of a number of fitting ways to make that recognition explicit." Read more

Several important conclusions can be drawn from Chief Minister Fabian Picardo’s recent appearance before the House of Commons, European Scrutiny Committee. Perhaps the most significant is that he has a rational, long-term political vision for the future of Gibraltar, a well-constructed plan that is unmatched by the paltry pursuits of an Opposition more concerned about short-term, party political scrambles for votes, than with addressing the matters of existential magnitude that shook us to the core after the Brexit upheaval reconfigured our political parameters for all time. My dear fellow Gibraltarians, Happy New Year 2022!
The year ahead will undoubtedly be a year of change for Gibraltar.
We will all hope it is the year we change back to something like the 'normal' we knew before the COVID 19 pandemic begun.
It will be a decisive year in our post-Brexit negotiations for a new UK/EU Gibraltar Treaty that will bring change whether we succeed or fail in the negotiations. Yet no one should fear or suggest that we will agree to anything with implications for our sovereignty. That will NEVER change.
It will be a key year for the changes in the GHA that will mean that the GHA will be run by the GHA with zero political involvement. Ministers will only set policy and the Minister for Health will not have an office at St Bernard's. All contracting and industrial relations matters are develoved already to the professional and clinical management of the GHA as we announced.
It will also be a year in which we will engage with Unions on the outstanding issues, including public and private sector employment issues, we have been unable to resolve during the twin storms of the pandemic and the Brexit negotiations, once both of these have been finally resolved.
