The GGCA says it fully supports its Custom’s membership in the difficult role they undertake in apprehending suspected smugglers.
The Executive Committee understands that this sort of illicit activity is primarily carried out late at night and early in the morning.
Furthermore, smugglers consistently undertake this criminal behaviour with an “at all costs” attitude, with no intention to stop when Customs Officers attempt to apprehend them. Read more

The 'Guardia Civil' chief in the Campo area Jesus Nunez says that more cooperation from Gibraltar would be desirable - and that Brexit is an opportunity for Spain to put things in their place.
This was uterred on the same day that the Gibraltar commissioner of police Ian McGrail was patting himslf on the back after the migrant operation, and stressing the cooperation that existed. Does McGrail think that the cooperation is from Gibraltar or from Spain? Read more

Even before the Windmill Hill Prison was officially opened in 2010 there were calls for change to the prison system through a process of reform. However, much like other problematic social issues which impact many in society also requiring reform, this has been ignored. And why last week I was not surprised to hear the new Prison Superintendent Gareth Coom say his priorities are the ‘Rehabilitation and a Juvenile Detention Centre’. Read more

The Ministry of Equality will be holding a fireside conversation to discuss the effects and impact of gender stereotypes in children’s fairy tales. This event follows on from the launch of the Modern Fairy Tales short story writing competition in November 2019 and the writing workshop delivered by author Sally Bayley, as part of the Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival 2019. Gibraltar Cultural Services is delighted to be hosting a group of Moroccan artists and musicians next week, as part of a cultural exchange between Gibraltar and Tangier. The artists will be in Gibraltar from the 12th to 16th January 2020, inclusive.
Visits have been arranged to local educational establishments to undertake various workshops for pupils of different ages in a range of topics including art, music and languages. Read more

The police say that 47 persons have been arrested during a joint Policia Nacional and Royal Gibraltar Police operation targeting an organised crime group trafficking migrants from Morocco into Spain and various other European countries. Over 130 Moroccan nationals trafficked into Spain. Read more

Two picnic sites on the Upper Rock have been prepared in time for the spring.
The site at Jews’ Gate, at the lower entrance to the path leading to Mediterranean Steps, has been refurbished, while a new area with tables and benches has been created at the site of the old Willis’s Guard room, at the opposite (northern) end of the Upper Rock. Read more
