In the UK, patients can wait nearly a year before starting routine hospital treatment. This pressure on health services all over Europe already existed prior to the pandemic. However, the latest data from NHS England reflects just how much Covid-19 had put everything else on hold and prioritised healthcare in that area while everyone else had to wait for longer.

Those repercussions are still being felt, and not only in Gibraltar. The NHS in England has just posted a record figure of 7.6 million people waiting for an operation, which is reported to be the highest since records begun. There are other reasons for this aside from the pandemic though which are unique to NHS England.
