Summer Sports Table Tennis

STUDENT WORK EXPERIENCE
The Panorama then had the pleasure of catching up with Joe Martinez, a longstanding member and integral component of the development of table tennis in Gibraltar.

He outlined the activates that were taking place in this years Table Tennis Summer Sports camp as well as providing us with a history of the development of table tennis in Gibraltar. Mr. Martinez delved into his wealth of experience as he ‘started playing in 1972’ and continued while in ‘university in Leeds’ at ‘county level’. This was in the context of the immense popularity of table tennis in Gibraltar ‘during the closing of the frontier’ where there were ‘3 divisions with 12 teams in each’. After a slight dip in popularity, table tennis was revived and became ‘competitive’ after the 2017 Island Games in Gotland where Gibraltar submitted its proposal to host the Island Games 2019.
