Wednesday 23rd February 2022 marks International Rotary Day. The day celebrates the creation of the organisation on February 23rd 1905 by Paul P. Harris in Chicago, USA.
Here on the Rock, the Gibraltar Rotary Club was established 54 years ago and still to this day is a prominent figure within the local community.
President of the Rotary Club of Gibraltar, Jane Hart Simmons explained the background of the organisation: “The reason for it was for businessmen to meet up in friendship to be able to help each other with their own business and promotion, but also in giving to the world.”
The name Rotary was to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members' various places of business.
Jane continued: “It is a charity fund to help raise funds for people in need. The Gibraltar Club has been going for 54 years and started off as an all-male club. But in 2000, they allowed women into it and now we have 50/50 male and female membership.”
