SPECIAL REPORT by PETER TABERNER
The highly transmissible Omicron variant has presented the world with its next major challenge with coronavirus, leaving the Gibraltar Government to plan its response and also deal with the fallout of the new variant.
The first cases of Omicron were detected last month, and its hardly surprising that the Covid cases increased on the Rock, factoring in the combination of a more infectious virus and the socially busy Christmas and New Year period.
According to the World Health Organisation, infections on December 27 rose week on week by just under 80% with 652 confirmed cases.
On January 10 the amount of confirmed cases had climbed up to 1007.
