Indeed, it has long been said that it is blessed: ‘estamos bendecidos’ (‘we are blessed’) is a refrain often heard from many in the community, especially the older generation. But is Gibraltar blessed no more? I took to the streets to ask people whether they believed that Gibraltar was still a safe place in which to live.
‘It’s relatively safe in comparison to other countries, but it is concerning that violence is becoming more prevalent’, said one lady. One elderly lady instead insisted that Gibraltar was ‘very unsafe; it used to be safer before’. Her husband agreed, and added that ‘Gibraltar is no longer a safe place, it was a safe place when everyone could go out for a walk without any problems or interference, but nowadays even to cross the road you need 100 eyes’.
