‘Positive discussions’ between Government and Representation in Westminster Group

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia has met with the Representation in Westminster Group.

There was a positive and constructive discussion on the aims and objectives of the Representation in Westminster Group and the policy of the Government.

It was suggested that the group give evidence to the Select Committee on the Constitution after the Committee has been established and the call to evidence is advertised.

There was also an agreement that the Government and the Group would continue to engage on these matters.

At the meeting, Dr Garcia explained the policy of the Government as set out in the manifesto of the GSLP/Liberals for last month’s general election.

This stated that Gibraltar has been represented in the European Parliament as part of the South West Region of England since 2004, an arrangement that will come to an end in the event that the UK and Gibraltar exit the European Union.

It is therefore important to investigate fully the options available to Gibraltar for representation at the Westminster Parliament instead.

"The GSLP Liberals will explore the possibility of representation for Gibraltar in the Westminster Parliament in a manner where Gibraltar retains all the constitutional powers that are currently exercised by the Government and Parliament of Gibraltar," said the manifesto commitment.
