John Charles Pons, a long time environmental activist, will be running for this year’s General Election on the 17th of October. He signed in Parliament on Tuesday, putting his name down with his friends and supporters.
With the environment a key issue to him, he told PANORAMA, “I am running for election because of the climate issue that we have around the world. I don’t believe enough is being done to tackle the climate emergency. I am heavily inspired by Greta Thunberg, Climate Change scientists have been researching into the subject for over 40 years and have said nothing, yet she, a 16 year old, comes out with all the facts about how things are. I am running to do something more serious than I was doing yesterday, and I am running for the environment, for the youth and for the youth’s future.
“It’s funny because I am doing all this for the people who can’t vote, the children in schools.
“The chances of coming out as an independent candidate in this system is very difficult but the best I can do is try.”
In regards to his political manifesto, he said, “My manifesto will come out in the next few days, we will also be holding a meeting at the Cathedral at 4 on Friday for those who are interested in listening what I have to say.”
“Gibraltar can do better, the world can do better when it comes to the environment.”
